Daniela Comani, Eine glueckliche Ehe / Un matrimonio felice / A Happy Marriage
2003 - ongoing, series of photographs, archival prints on photo rag 308g, each 50 x 60 cm
I began the project "A Happy Marriage" in 2003. The first photographs were 5 portrait pieces, or rather double portraits. I made pictures from a happy couple, and I played both roles of the woman and man. A year later, I made a lot of photographs of everyday scenes: the couple eating, walking, shopping, driving, traveling, sleeping, etc &
In order to realize the photographs I needed a lot of pictures as a man and a lot of pictures as a woman. I used a tripod and a timed shutter-release because I made the pictures alone and I was the photographer and the subject at the same time. For the role of the man, I put on false facial hair, like a beard. And for the role of the woman, I needed some makeup. Really important is the performance aspect: I played with the traditional gender stereotype. For example, the man is sitting with wide open legs, and the woman is friendly smiling.
This project is a work in progress and it is a very big series.
A part of the work is the list of the FAQ about this work, that the visitors of the exhibition asked me:
i.e.:
"Is he really your husband"?
"Is he your brother"?
"You know, I think, I know your husband".
